Don't buy your Shiki Futon from J-Life International, Inc., December 25, 2009

After about a month waiting for our shiki futon, it arrived. It's a nice bed don't get me wrong, however the company who sells it is horrible. I never received replies to my inquiries about my order. I called 3 times and they told me my order was to be shipped within a day or two of each call. I would totally understand two weeks but not a month. Buy at your own risk. They blame the manufacturer for the delays which is fine but to wait a month for a bed is unheard of these days.

It seems that when a company has a monopoly on something, they no longer care about customer service. I didn't order through Amazon but through the J-Life homepage and I've been waiting over a month too with little feedback. I now seriously question the quality of this company since nobody else is selling these types of futons in all the US that I could find, there is no one to compare quality with, and nobody they need worry about competing with. Why aren't there any importers that bring these futons to the US? Someone could do well to start such a business and give J-Life some very needed competition.

The Best Mattress... and a little about JLife, Int., June 18, 2011

I just purchased a full size a bed frame, shikifuton mattress, 3 buckwheat pillows, a mattress cover, and extra matching material from JLife international. I dealt with them directly, not through Amazon, but I wanted to put my review here to be seen. The mattress is incredible, exactly what I had hoped it would be. It is NOT for everyone. You must desire an EXTRA FIRM support. If you're hoping for the effect of a pillow top mattress, or a tempurpedic type mattress, this probably isn't for you. I have discovered, after many years, that I need a VERY firm mattress. I've actually slept on a carpeted floor with only a comforter beneath me to get this effect. In recent years, I bought a platform bed and used a foam mattress topper ONLY, without the mattress, in an attempt to get a very firm sleeping surface. This did work, but I recently moved and needed something new. I discovered this mattress, which I could only find through JLife International. I just received it, and I love it. It actually feels quite soft and comfortable, yet is only 4 inches thick, so it gives me that firm support I need. I ordered a platform bed with a panel over it to put it on. When I lie on it, I can literally feel my spine adjusting into place.

As far as JLife goes, and another reviewer who said they were horrible and slow, here's my input. When I first decided to order from them, I liked the idea that they were a small, local company. I planned to order a bed frame (made outside of JLife but sold by them), and the shikifuton mattress with a custom cover, several buckwheat pillows, and some extra matching material. I called them several times during business hours and got a machine. I left several messages and didn't get a call back. Finally I left a message saying I've been trying to reach them, and they did call back. She said they always return calls, and I told her I had left several messages. I was a little worried that we were off to a bad start, but I really wanted these products, and I really wanted to buy local (they are local to me).

So I asked my questions, and she gave me the answers I needed and was informative and so I placed my order. I will say this: They are not fast. It did take several weeks to receive my order. She called me to inform me that there would be a delay, because they were out of the fabric color that I had selected and had to order it from Japan.

After a few weeks, I got my delivery confirmation. It arrived the next day via Fed Ex. It was very well packed. The mattress was double wrapped, first in a giant plastic bag, and then in a plastic tarp type material. It's a good thing too, because it sat out in the rain before I discovered the box. All three pillows and the extra fabric were all individually sealed in plastic as well, with washing instructions enclosed.

I have not received the bed frame yet, but again, the bed frame is made to order through a third party. I am very satisfied with my purchase. Everything is made to order, specifically for me. The mattress is excellent quality and covered with a very heavy duck material. I love that it's all natural cotton as filler. It's exactly as described. The material that I chose for a cover and matching pillows are exactly as represented on their website (www.jlifeinternational.com). The buckwheat pillows come VERY overstuffed but with zippers so you can remove some to get to your comfort level and I used the extra in handmade scented sachets.

So bottom line, yes, they're slow. If you're looking for Walmart fast, this is not the company to order from. But if you are looking for a small business who makes quality made to order products, and you have some patience on your hands, they are worthwhile. I placed my order with the full understanding that it would not be quick. So if you want quick, go to Walmart. But if you want quality, I would recommend JLife. I got everything I expected.

A month after placing order, the bed arrived in a heavily damaged box with the corners clearly exposed. They were rusty. It was in such bad shape, the carrier called me to warn that I might want to come out and inspect the bed. Seller representatives were polite and helpful on the phone. The box looked as though it might have been in water at some point.

I ordered 2 of these (1 silver, 1 black) and received them a few days ago. I ordered from Loftbedstation.com though and paid a little more than this. Overall the bed is good quality, took about 3 hours to build, and my kids are very happy with them.

A few complaints though... the frame is a little wobbly, it's not going to fall down, but does move around a bit.

Secondly, the entire bed ships in one massive box that weighs a ton. Both boxes I got had some bent parts. I was still able to put it together, but one of them was one of the main rails at the top and looks horrible. It wasn't bent due to box damage, I firmly believe it was damaged due to just the massive weight of the box. They should split it into 2 boxes or something.

Third, the steps are thin metal... they really hurt on bare feet. I'm thinking about getting some thick pads to put over them.

Some things to keep in mind... pay very close attention to the instructions, they are not very clear and you can easily mess up and have to redo some of the steps cause you did a piece backwards. Get an allen wrench with a handle, the tiny one they ship with hurts on the hands after screwing in about 40 screws. Have 2 people build this... some of the bars are tough to hold up by yourself, and the wood plank for the desk is almost impossible to put on the mounts and still be able to get a screw in to hold it in place by yourself.

Our 5-year old daughter loves this castle tent! Mom and Dad have a few hesitations. Putting the tent together was simple and it fits snuggly over the bed much like a fitted sheet - therein lies the problem. Because it DOES fit like a sheet, there is no way to put a real fitted sheet on the bottom of the tent, which means unless you just lay a sheet on the bottom (which slides around easily), your child sleeps on plastic - a bit hot. If you decide to take it down, you really need to take it apart to store it. Having said that - it looks cute and flaps are easy to roll up and tie in place. Our daughter really views it as her secret escape and doesn't mind being left alone to sleep.

My daughter got this for Christmas this year. She loves having her own tent. She was always making tents with blankets and the kitchen chairs, and I saw this and knew she'd love it. She loves "camping" with all her stuffed animals! The tent seems very durable, and I have not had a problem with it falling off the bed. Although it is supposed to fit the bed like a fitted sheet, the elastic ends dont seem to be "tight" enough. However the tent poles keep it in place. She's had it on her bed since Christmas night, and it has not shifted at all. I especially like the screened "windows" on the doors of the tent. That way I dont have to unzip it to check on her at night, I can just look thru the windows.
